Update: Daily Review 3×5
I’ve been using my Daily Review 3×5 form for a few days now. I seem less inclined to use it than my Daily Planning card, but the Daily Review card holds more value.
Usability Mods
After using it for a little bit, I’ve made a couple adjustments to extract higher value:
- Outlook for Tomorrow: The biggest change made was to this section. Thinking ahead about the things I will experience tomorrow ended up making this section like a prediction for the review. I added the 1 to 5 rating for how I feel it’s going to be. I also added 3 lines for the top 3 events that I think will be significant tomorrow.
- Things to Remember: I renamed this section because I used it for multiple reasons. Sometimes I would write why things didn’t go to plan. Sometimes I would just write more details about my top 5 significant events that I want to remember. Other times I would write insights about myself that are useful to know (like sometimes I have side-chatter in my mind, distracting my total focus).
How’s It Going?
There are a few challenges that I need to overcome to make this form as useful as it can be:
- Small Window for Use: The most difficult thing about using the review card is the limited window for use. Since it’s a daily review, it’s most effective if I use it at the end of the day (or potentially early the next morning). As you can guess, I am ready to go to sleep at the end of the day. I once read about a guy who does his end-of-day routine at 10PM, no matter what he is doing. Maybe I’ll try to do it a little earlier.
- It Requires Thought: Analysis of what I can learn from my life is more difficult than figuring out what I need to do. This in particular has been a mental block because I make it seem like a high-resource task, causing me to avoid it towards the end of the day.
- Required Time: When I actually get around to reviewing my day, it takes about 15 minutes, which really isn’t too bad. Reminding myself that may be useful in becoming more consistent in analyzing my life.
